Install the Windows Recovery Console in Boot Menu

The Windows Recovery Console is required to fix many startup issues caused by malware, viruses, and corrupt system files. The Recovery Console can be booted from the Windows Setup disc, but many machines (including Netbooks) do not have CD drives or easy access to the Windows Setup disc.

Below are the instructions to install the Recovery Console on any Windows XP machine as a boot list option. You will no longer need physical access to the Windows Setup disc (except to install initially) when things go wrong.

  • Insert the Windows XP setup disc.
  • Click Start -> Run and type: "%windir%\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons"
  • Click YES on the Windows Setup box to install the Recovery Console.
  • Setup will attempt to connect to the Internet to update any setup files from the disc. Press ESC to interrupt the setup and use the files on the disc only.
  • Once the Recovery Console is installed a confirmation box will pop up. Click OK.

Some Windows XP passwords will not be recognized by the Recovery Console. To remove the password requirement, modify the following registry key:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
  • Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1.

How To Install Windows 7/Vista From USB Drive

The method is very simple and you can use without any hassles. Needless to say that your motherboard should support USB Boot feature to make use of the bootable USB drive.

Requirements:

*USB Flash Drive (Minimum 4GB)

*Windows 7 or Vista installation files.

Follow the below steps to create bootable Windows 7/Vista USB drive using which you can install Windows 7/Vista easily.

1. Plug-in your USB flash drive to USB port and move all the contents from USB drive to a safe location on your system.

2. Open Command Prompt with admin rights. Use any of the below methods to open Command Prompt with admin rights.

*Type cmd in Start menu search box and hit Ctrl+ Shift+ Enter.

Or

*Go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

3. You need to know about the USB drive a little bit. Type in the following commands in the command prompt:

First type DISKPART and hit enter to see the below message.

Next type LIST DISK command and note down the Disk number (ex: Disk 1) of your USB flash drive. In the below screenshot my Flash Drive Disk no is Disk 1.

4. Next type all the below commands one by one. Here I assume that your disk drive no is "Disk 1".If you have Disk 2 as your USB flash drive then use Disk 2.Refer the above step to confirm it.

So below are the commands you need to type and execute one by one:

SELECT DISK 1

CLEAN

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS

(Format process may take few seconds)

ASSIGN

EXIT

Don't close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

5. Next insert your Windows7/Vista DVD into the optical drive and check the drive letter of the DVD drive. In this guide I will assume that your DVD drive letter is "D" and USB drive letter is "H" (open my computer to know about it).

6. Maximize the minimized Command Prompt in the 4th step.Type the following command now:

D: CD BOOT and hit enter.Where "D" is your DVD drive letter.

CD BOOT and hit enter to see the below message.

7. Type another command given below to update the USB drive with BOOTMGR compatible code.

BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 H:

Where "H" is your USB drive letter. Once you enter the above command you will see the below message.

8. Copy your Windows 7/Vista DVD contents to the USB flash drive.

9. Your USB drive is ready to boot and install Windows 7/Vista. Only thing you need to change the boot priority at the BIOS to USB from the HDD or CD ROM drive. I won't explain it as it's just the matter the changing the boot priority or enabling the USB boot option in the BIOS.

Note: If you are not able to boot after following this guide means you haven't set the BIOS priority to USB. If you got any problem in following this guide feel free to ask questions by leaving comment.

Creating Multi-boot DVDs with EasyBoot

6:41 PM by Yash Kalra 0 comments

f you are a system administrator, then you probably have a whole bunch of CDs of all the operating systems installed on your network. So you d be hunting for the right CD every time you have to install an OS on any machine. This can be difficult and time consuming. The way out is to put all your operating systems on a single DVD. These DVDs can also be made to support multi-booting. So whenever you insert the DVD into a drive and reboot the machine, it will list all the operating systems it has so that you can choose the one you want to install. Heres the way you can do it.

First you need a boot loader for the DVD, which supports multi-booting. There are many ways to burn a multi-boot DVD.

The easiest is to use a software called Easy boot 4.1, which is a shareware utility. It even lets you create colorful boot menus with background pictures. It is easy to use and creates an ISO image as the output file, which can then be used to burn a DVD using Nero.

After the utility is installed, it creates an EasyBoot shortcut on your desktop. Double click it to open a preview menu window and the Easy boot window. From the Easy Boot window, you can change the menu layout and boot menu settings. Click on the Menu tab to set the text for each menu and the command for each to load its corresponding boot image. This command will be executed when the menu is selected. In multi-booting, the boot loader calls the selected boot sector, which will be present in an .img or .bin file. The boot sector, then further searches for the OS kernel and loads it.

After configuring the menus, you need to dump installers for all the operating systems to C:\EasyBoot\Disk1 folder. Then copy the OS boot image (a .bin or .img file) to the C:\EasyBoot\Disk1\ezboot folder. This is the same image file that you specified in the menu command while creating the menu.

Now from the EasyBoot window, select the File tab and click the Make ISO button. This will prompt you to create an ISO image out of all the contents dumped in C:\EasyBoot\Disk1. Click Make button. The tool creates the bootable ISO file in the C:\EasyBoot\iso directory.

Finally you need to make a Bootable DVD out of this ISO image. Start the Nero burning software and select Recorder>Burn Image from the menu bar. Here a burn compilation window will pop up. Select DVD from the drop down list and click the Burn button to make your multi-boot DVD.

Now whenever you insert this DVD into a drive and boot the machine, it will show you a menu of all the operating systems stored in it. Choose the one you want to install

Install Windows 7/ Vista on your Hard disc Without using any DVD/CD or Pendrive (USB drive)

How about installing Windows 7 or Windows Vista without using any DVD or Pendrive / USB drive? Yes this is possible. Users who don't want to burn the Windows 7/ Vista ISO image to a DVD or those who don't have a windows startup disc can now install Windows 7 on their PC. Installing Windows from the Hard Drive is much faster than installing from DVD/CD.This tutorial is made on the assumption that the new Windows 7 or Windows Vista is going to be installed and replace the current one. The instructions can be slightly modified if you want a dual boot system.

  1. On your existing Operating System install a virtual DVD/CD drive first. Magic Disc virtual DVD/CD rom can do this and is free.
  2. Now mount the ISO image of Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
  3. Then copy all the files from this Virtual drive you mounted now to a drive in which you don't want to install Windows. for example if you want to install Windows on C drive copy them to E:\Windows7 or so.
  4. Now copy the bootfolders and bootmgr seen inside the copied folder (here E:\windows7) to your main booting drive probably C:\.
  5. Vista users must follow this step ie. you need to copy the bootmgr folder from (E:\windows7) to C:\ root directory. Copy E:\Windows7\boot\boot.sdi and bootsect.exe from E:\Windows7\boot\ folder to C:\boot folder and C:\ drive respectively.
  6. The boot folder is hidden by default check the option to show hidden files and folder and also show protected system files from "Folder Options".
  7. Now under C:\ root folder create a new folder named sources.
  8. Copy the boot.wim file from E:\Windows7\sources to the sources folder created in the above step (7).
  9. Now right click the Command Prompt in the start menu and select "Run as Administrator".
  10. Type the following command C:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 C: for vista users who did the step 5 should type the command as C:\bootsect.exe /nt60 C: .
  11. Now change the name of the boot system partion to any name you prefer (in command prompt use label command). for eg. type C:\ label mycdrive. Remember the name you have given.
  12. Now restart the System.
  13. After that Windows will automatically run the setup process. On continuing with the installation steps when you see the option to Install Windows do not click it instead click the option to Repair my Computer (seen at the bottom left).
  14. Now in the WinRE System Recovery Options window open the Command Prompt.
  15. Now type the following command format c: /q .
  16. /q switch is used to do a quick format option it is optional.
  17. If you want to convert the drive to NTFS system type the command as c: /q /fs:ntfs.
  18. Just before the formatting begins you may be asked to enter the name of the partition as mycdrive enter it accordingly.
  19. After the formatting completes Start the Windows setup from the copied folder ie E:\Windows7\sources\setup.exe.
  20. Now continue with the process as usual.

  1. First you need to format the pendrive or USB drive in NTFS format. (Make sure you are following this guide with windows vista installed)
  2. This can be done by right clicking your pendrive icon and choosing format option.
  3. Now from the start menu right click on command prompt and choose "Run as administrator".
  4. Now type the following commands.
  5. diskpart .The disk part program windows will open.

  8. Now type CLEAN.
  9. Now type the following commands by pressing enter after each one.
  10. CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
  11. SELECT PARTITION 1 (Assuming your pendrive/ USB drive is 1).
  12. ACTIVE
  13. FORMAT FS=NTFS
  14. ASSIGN
  15. EXIT(Now the disk partition program will exit). Now we need to give some more commands.
  16. Now insert the Windows Vista Installation DVD and to your DVD drive.
  17. Here i am assuming DVD drive as G and Pendrive as I.(Change it accordingly).
  18. Now type G:CD BOOT
  19. Now type this command BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 I: to update your USB drive with bootmgr code.
  20. Finally copy all the contents from the Windows Vista DVD to your Pendrive. Make sure you don't cause any errors.
  21. Now set the boot priority to your pendrive from bios and you can proceed with the installation as normal.

Now vista can be installed on any pc with the help of this pen drive you have just created now.

Speed Up Windows 7 - Ultimate Guide

7:47 PM by Yash Kalra 0 comments

Windows 7 is Engineered for speed. Special attention has been given by the Windows 7 team for making Windows 7 faster than the previous operating systems. Windows 7 is much faster than Windows Vista, but even then most of us don't get satisfied with it. There are many who still have their old PC. Installing Windows 7 on them wont be as soothing as they work with with XP and Even with latest hardware's installed some users still long for more performance. At least if we don't make it lightning fast we can optimize Windows 7 to the maximum possible extent and enjoy the maximum performance we could squeeze out from it. So for all the extra performance lovers, let me present you wit this Ultimate Guide To Speed Up Windows 7.
Speed Up Windows 7 - The Ultimate Guide To Make Windows 7 Blazing FastI guarantee you that after following this guide and implementing the recommendations on your PC, you will really get the performance gain.

The bare Minimum Requirements You need To Run Windows 7

1) 1GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
2) 1GB of main memory
3) 16GB of available disk space
4) Support for DX9 graphics with 128MB of memory (for the Aero interface)
5) A DVD - R/W drive

Even if you don't have the DX 9 graphics card there is no problem because our target is performance not the " Eyecandy " . Of course if you need the aero experience you need a powerful graphics card for sure.
So lets startThe Ultimate Guide to Speed up Windows 7

  1. Speed Up the Windows 7 Boot Speed

  2. A simple tweak will help you to decrease the boot time of windows 7. You will be benified by this tweak only if you have a multiple core processor. These days most of the computers have a dual core or quad core or something better than that CPU's.

    • Press [Win] + R or take the RUN option from the start menu.
    • Now type msconfig in there and press Enter Key to open up the System Configuration Window. Click on the Boot tab in there.
You will see a box called Time out. This is the time (in sec) which the system waits for the user to select the operating system to boot to.
    • If you use only a single operating system (don't dual boot) you can safely set the value to 0.
    • But if you have more than one operating system installed then set it to 3 or more (which ever is convenient).

    • Now after doing the above step click the " Advanced Options " button. The Boot Advanced Options Window will then pop up.
    • Tick the check box saying "Number of Processors". Now click on the drop down box and select the maximum number of processor cores (might be 2 or more).
    • Press " OK " and also tick the " No GUI Boot " option too.
    • Click " Apply "and then on " OK " and thats it.
  3. Disable the Aero Theme on Windows 7

  4. The aero user interface certainly adds some " Eyecandy " to Windows 7 but certainly is a resource hog especially when, what you expect from windows 7 is more performance juice. Aero user interface squeezes your graphics or video card to its maximum. So why cant we just avoid the Windows 7 aero? if we care more about speed and performance in Windows 7. So Disabling the Aero in Windows 7 certainly adds an extra speed boost to it.

Speed Up Windows 7 by disabling the aero user interface

    • Right Click on your Desktop and select " Personalize " click the Window Color Tab.
    • Uncheck the Box saying " Enable Transparency " and then click on " Open classic appearance properties for more color options".
    • Then a window will open up. Apply a Standard or Basic theme from it. The Standard Windows 7 theme is more preferred.

Disabling the aero theme alone in Windows 7 will really speed things up.

  5. Disabling the Unwanted Visual Effects in Windows 7 to Speed Up more

  6. Even though we have tuned off the aero effects in Windows 7 still there are many unwanted visual effects that can be safely disabled to speed up windows 7 even more.

Speeding Up Windows 7 by removing unwanted visual effects

    • For this right click on " Computer" and select "Properties" from the right click menu.
    • Click on " Advanced System Settings " from the left pane to open up the " System Properties " window.
    • Select the "Advanced" tab from it. Then Under " Performance " click " Settings ". Choose " Custom: " Options From it.
    • Now untick all the options and select only the last four options (actually three only needed; you can untick the second option from the last four). See the screen shot if you have any doubt.
    • Now just logoff your system and turn logon.

You will now notice the speed difference now.

  7. Disabling the Unwanted Services to Speed up Windows 7

  8. There are many services in windows 7 that we dont require for our daily use. There are some exceptional cases though. Services such as "print spooler" is only needed when we use a printer. If we use a printer only occasionally we can safely turn off that service in Windows 7 and turn it on only when we need to take a print.
I have previously prepared a List of services in Windows 7 that can be safely set to manual / disabled.
Disabling the unneeded services in Windows 7 can really speed up the system boot time.

  9. Disable the User account control (UAC) Feature in Windows 7

  10. The User account control (UAC) feature in Windows 7 is very annoying though it says it can protect your computer from harmful virus activity etc. But if you are a daily user of your computer this windows 7 feature will be a total nuisance to you.

To Disable and Turnoff UAC in Windows 7

Speed UP Windows 7 by disabling User Account Control(UAC)

    • From the Control Panel open the " User Accounts and Family Safety " > User Account.
    • Click the User Account Control settings link.
    • Now just Drag the Slider towards "Never Notify".
    • Click "OK" and Reboot your system.

Disabling UAC is for advanced users only i dont recommend doing it if not.

  11. Disabling the Search Indexing Feature in Windows 7

  12. Most of the Windows 7 users do less searches in there system. The Search Indexing service in Windows 7 will index keeps track of the files so that they can be found quickly when asked at some other time. This feature is useful only if you perform frequent searches on your system.
For occasional file searchers the Search Indexing service in Windows 7 is a total resource hog. It unwontedly eats up your system resources. What you need from windows 7 is maximum performance from it then i would certainly recommend you to disable this resource hogging Windows 7 Search Indexing Feature.

To Disable the Search Indexing Feature in Windows 7

Disable the Search Indexing Feature in Windows 7 to Speed up Windows 7

    • Right Click the "Computer" Icon in the desktop and select "Manage".
    • Click "Services and Applications" in the "Computer Management" window.
    • Click on "Services".
    • You can see a lot of services listed there. Look for "Windows Search" in that.
    • Right Click on "Windows Search" from the list and choose "Properties".
    • The "Windows Search Properties Window" will open up. From "Startup type" click on the drop down menu and choose "Disabled".
    • Click "Apply" then "OK" and thats it. The Windows 7 Serch Indexing Feature is now disabled.

If you want to completely disable the search indexing feature in Windows 7 you can set the Search Indexing Service to Manual (See the above method about disabling unwanted services).

  13. SetUp the Windows 7 Ready Boost Service for an Extra Speed Boost

  14. The ready boost feature in Windows 7 will help you to use your flash drive or pendrive or USB drive as Ram there by improving the performance and speed of windows 7 greatly. You can certainly experience it when launching bulky applications such as Adobe Photoshop etc.

Speed Up Windows 7 with Ready Boost

    • To configure the Ready Boost Feature in Windows 7 you need to have a High Speed Flash/USB or Pendrive with you which is ready boost compatible.
    • After plugging you pendrive, open "Computer" > Right-click the on USB Drive/Pendrive > select "Ready Boost" tab > tick the "Use this device" checkbox.
    • You can configure how much space on your USB drive/ Pendrive to be used as Ram.
  15. Turn off Unused Windows 7 Features

  16. There are many feature in windows 7 that we often dont use. Disabling these unused features in Windows 7 will really help in speeding things up.

    • Open up " Programs and Features " from Control Panel.
    • Click the " Turn Windows features on or off " from the left pane.
    • Now uncheck all the Feature that you don't use in Windows 7 and restart the system for the changes to take effect.
  17. Disable the Windows 7 Sidebar (Actually the Gadgets)

  18. Disabling the window 7 sidebar is defenitely help you to to gain a few seconds during start up time. There are many useful utilities such as the RocketDock etc. which are good application launchers.

To Disable the Sidebar in Windows 7,

    • Right click on the sidebar and select " Properties ".
    • On the properties windows untick the check box showing " Start sidebar when Windows Starts "
    • From now on windows sidebar won't start when windows 7 start up.

  20. Aero Snap will help you to maximize, minimize and resize the windows just by dragging and dropping it into the screen corners.

To disable Aero Snap Feature in Windows 7,

    • Open the Windows 7 " Control Panel " and double-click on " Ease of Access Center " icon.
    • Now click on the " Make it easier to focus on tasks " seen at the bottom in there
    • Now untick the check box saying " Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen " .

That will now disable the Aero Snap in Windows 7.

Now To Disable the Aero Peek feature in Windows 7

The Aero Peek feature in Windows 7 helps you to peek through all open windows by hiding all other windows and showing only the outlines of all windows. Aero Peek is similar to the " Show Desktop " Feature in XP and Vista.

If you have followed step 3 then Aero Peek will be automatically disabled. If not,

    • Right click on the Windows 7 taskbar and select " Properties ".
    • Now untick the " Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop " option from there.

Differences Between Retail, OEM, System Builder, Volume Licensing, Full or Upgrade License for Windows

Differences Between Retail, OEM, System Builder, Volume Licensing, Full or Upgrade License for Windows

Windows users, no matter it's Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003, must have often heard of retail license, royalty OEM factory preactivated license, volume license, full packaged product (FPP), upgrade license and etc. But what's exactly is the differences between Retail, OEM, Volume, Full or Upgrade license?

Licenses for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 can be obtained through one of three basic channels: retail, original equipment manufacturer (OEM), or Volume Licensing. The implication of different channels of license is mainly that each channel has its own unique methods of activation. The Windows XP installation CD even has different versions for each channel of distributions, even though all CDs will be used to installed to the same final product, although since Windows Vista, although the practice has since been discontinued since Windows Vista with the exception to OEM version, which may be manufacturer-specific.

Here's a brief explanation on various licenses or licensing schemes that available for Windows operating system from Microsoft.

Retail:

Windows operating system products that are acquired through a retail store (physical or online) are individually licensed and are activated. Retail version of Windows generally can be purchased in two license pricing levels, namely Full of Upgrade license.
Full License - also known as Full Packaged Product (FPP). The full version of Windows has no limitation on how customers can install and use the OS, as long as each PC has its own legitimate license. Full retail can perform either clean (custom) and upgrade install, and can be transferred to upgraded or entirely new systems as long as only one copy is installed at a time. Full license is always the most expensive edition, and is normally purchased for computer that does not sold with Windows operating system originally.

Upgrade License - available at cheaper discounted price (for example see Windows 7 prices or Windows Vista prices), upgrade license is targeted at end-users who already has a genuine license of previous version of Windows operating system, and wish to move to newer operating system. For example, upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Upgrade retail license can only be installed on a system that already has an OEM or full license.

Retail version of Windows license includes full support from Microsoft, and each purchased copy comes with one unique product key (printed on the product packaging), which the user enters during the product installation to complete the activation online or via phone.

OEM:

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) license is a restricted version of Windows that included with a new computer. Manufacturers and vendors ship Windows with OEM license as it's deeply discounted when compared with retail copy. OEM license has limitation that it can only perform a clean install or custom install, but not upgrade.

Since Windows Vista and including Windows 7, EULA of OEM license can only be installed on one computer, and is forever locked and bounded to the computer (motherboard) of which it's installed. In Windows XP, OEM license can be installed on one computer at a time. OEM license is always the least expensive edition, but is available to OEMs only.

OEM license also has another variant called System Builder OEM license, which is also an OEM license with lesser discount, has all the same restrictions and limitations of OEM license. But System Builder OEM license may be available to general customer who purchased a new PC (or hardware) from a small system builder via retail store.

Hardware vendors perform OEM activation by associating the operating system to the firmware (basic input/output system, or BIOS) of the computer prior to shipping new PC to customer. So no additional actions are required by the user to activate Windows, except when user choose to activate Windows with COA (Certificate of Authenticity) product key, which normally pasted on the casing of the hardware, in the case of not installing Windows with OEM provided image.

Support for Windows with OEM license is provided by OEM or system builder, which is usually non-existent. So, end-users are virtually have to support their own.

Volume Licensing:

Volume licenses is a software license programs (depending on the Volume Licensing program, subscriber may receive media, or has the option to acquire media or supplemental media, documentation, and product support separately as needed) that are sold in bulk to corporate customers, in quantities of five or more at a time. There are actually many options and choices available for volume licensing, such as Open Value, Open Value Subscription, Open License, Select Plus, Select License, Enterprise Agreement, and Enterprise Subscription Agreement. Some editions of Windows, such as Windows 7 Enterprise, are available only through the Volume Licensing channel.

Again, depending on Volume Licensing programs or related entitlement customizations, Volume License may cover only upgrades to Windows client operating systems, and thus require qualifying OS licensing for each computer before upgrade rights obtained through Volume Licensing can be exercised on these computers.

Windows with volume license can be activated through Volume Activation models, which is through Key Management Service (KMS), a locally hosted activation services preactivated with Microsoft activation service normally used in large corporations with minimum activation threshold of 5 servers or 25 client computers (physical or virtual machines), and Multiple Activation Key (MAK), which similar to retail product key and used for one-time activation with Microsoft's hosted activation services, independently or through MAK proxy.
